In an ambitious move to lead the eco-mobility revolution in India, Jindal Stainless, the nation’s foremost stainless steel manufacturer, has announced a strategic partnership with JBM Auto Ltd., the country’s premier electric bus manufacturer. This collaboration is set to fabricate over 500 energy-efficient and lightweight stainless steel electric buses, showcasing a significant advancement in the pursuit of sustainable transportation solutions.
Jindal Stainless will supply JT Tubes, comprised of low-carbon, chromium-manganese austenitic stainless steel, to JBM Auto. This material, designated as N7 according to the Bureau of Indian Standards specification 6911, boasts triple the strength of the carbon steel traditionally used in bus fabrication. JBM Auto, with a robust order book of over 5,000 electric buses, is transitioning from carbon steel to stainless steel for its electric buses. This transition promises vehicles that are not only lighter but also offer enhanced performance, greater strength, and durability.
Abhyuday Jindal, Managing Director of Jindal Stainless, expressed enthusiasm about the initiative, stating, “We are glad to be a part of shaping the future of sustainable mobility in India. Lighter vehicles improve energy consumption, thereby reducing the carbon footprint of the transport sector.” He emphasized the cost-effectiveness and reduced maintenance needs of stainless steel, aligning with Jindal Stainless’s commitment to greener public transport modes.
Nishant Arya, Vice Chairman & Managing Director of JBM Auto Ltd, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the company’s dedication to clean mobility and its aim to foster EV adoption through an end-to-end electric mobility ecosystem. Arya is confident that the collaboration with Jindal Stainless will significantly contribute to their mission of making electric vehicles a sustainable public commuting option.
JBM Auto is also transitioning its export orders for electric buses to energy-efficient stainless steel buses, with Jindal Stainless’ domestic service arm, Jindal Stainless Steelway Limited (JSSL), providing the JT Tubes for the buses’ superstructure. The fabrication of stainless steel buses is set to begin this month, with a focus on domestic operations in Telangana, addressing the region’s corrosive environment.
The collaboration between Jindal Stainless and JBM Auto to produce stainless steel electric buses represents a groundbreaking step towards redefining India’s approach to public transport. By leveraging the strength and durability of stainless steel, this partnership not only enhances the structural integrity and lifespan of electric buses but also aligns with global efforts to minimize environmental impact. As India continues to strive for sustainable development, initiatives like these are vital in propelling the country towards a greener future, demonstrating a commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility in the transport sector.
