Jindal Stainless boosts India’s export capabilities with freight wagons to Mozambique
In a significant boost to India’s manufacturing and export capabilities, Jindal Stainless, the largest stainless steel manufacturer in India, has successfully supplied stainless steel for the production of 100 ‘Made in India’ freight wagons. These wagons, destined for Mozambique, were shipped from Gujarat’s Deendayal Port to the Port of Nacala, with the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways of the Government of India supporting the initiative. This milestone underscores India’s burgeoning prowess in logistics and manufacturing on a global scale.
The freight wagons, crafted from specially developed grade IRSM 44 stainless steel by Jindal Stainless for Indian Railways’ freight stock, demonstrate superior durability and longevity. Jindal Rail Infrastructure Limited (JRIL), a prominent freight car manufacturer in India, conceptualized and designed these tippler-style wagons, which boast a payload capacity of 63 metric tonnes each. The use of stainless steel not only enhances the wagons’ resistance to corrosion but also contributes to lower life cycle costs and reduced carbon emissions. These wagons are primarily intended for the transportation of coal and iron ore.
Commenting on this landmark development, Mr. Abhyuday Jindal, Managing Director of Jindal Stainless, stated, “We are proud to be a part of the ‘Made in India’ story as it underscores our country’s export capabilities and commitment to becoming a global manufacturing hub. Through these indigenously manufactured stainless steel freight wagons, we are not only enhancing the transportation efficiency but also showcasing India’s potential in advanced manufacturing. It will also position India as a key player in the global supply chain as we look forward to many more such achievements.”
This project is part of a broader trend where Jindal Stainless has consistently supported significant government railway projects and contributed to several firsts, such as India’s first Vande Metro train, the first underwater metro line in Kolkata, and the first train set of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS).
The export of these freight wagons marks a crucial step in India’s journey towards becoming an integral part of the global supply chain in heavy manufacturing. It not only illustrates the capabilities of Indian engineering and production but also highlights the strategic use of advanced materials like stainless steel to enhance product longevity and performance.
