Retail acquisition news : Jackson Mitchell Holdings, the parent company of Mitchell Grocery, has acquired supermarket chain Little Giant Farmers Market, which operates five grocery stores in Georgia, for an undisclosed price.
Little Giant Farmer’s Market will be a 100% owned subsidiary of Jackson Mitchell. Its stores are located in Riverdale, Jonesboro, Newnan, and Decatur.
The first ever store of Little Giant Farmer’s Market opened in 1984 in Riverdale, focused initially to sell farm fresh produce along with certain bakery and dairy offerings.
In 2002, the retailer transformed from a single farmers’ market-style operation to turn into a full-service supermarket chain. It grew the offerings at the Riverdale location and came up with a flagship store in Jonesboro and in 2009, opened its third store in Decatur.
In 2012, the retailer opened two more stores at Newnan.
After thirty years of founding the Riverdale produce store, owner of the Little Giant Farmer’s Market – Mickey Dixon has decided to move away from the business.
Mickey Dixon said: “I’m very pleased with Jackson taking over this operation. Little Giant has been my family away from family for the last 30 years, and I feel very confident about these great people going forward with our vision.
“I feel that they have the same morals and standards that align with our company values, and that is very important to me. The fact that they are honoring all employees by allowing them to continue to work here makes me feel good, and I am confident that I am leaving our loyal customers and employees in great hands.”
Jackson Mitchell Holdings’ founder and CEO – Jackson Mitchell, who is engaged in developing a retail chain called FreshTake, intends to improve each location of Little Giant Farmer’s Market.
All the existing 175 employees of the chain have been given the offer to continue to work at the Little Giant Farmer’s Market stores under the new owner.
Mitchell Grocery, which will cater to all the five stores as the main wholesaler, plans to expand variety across the store through the addition of bulk foods, fresh seafood, and more grab and go options. Mitchell is also looking to add a deli and bakery to all stores and expand the deli and bakery offerings in the Newnan stores.
Jackson Mitchell said: “I look forward to serving the Metro Atlanta area and the Riverdale, Jonesboro, Decatur, Newnan, and Sargent communities by offering value, fresh products, convenience, and fresh thinking to enhance the customer shopping experience.”
