ITI Limited secures Rs 95cr contract to transform mining operations in Uttarakhand
ITI Limited, a prominent public sector enterprise specialising in telecommunications, has been awarded a ₹95 crore contract by the Directorate of Geology and Mining, Government of Uttarakhand. The ambitious Mining Digital Transformation and Surveillance System (MDTSS) project aims to address illegal mining, optimise mineral transport, and enhance the state’s revenue.
The five-year initiative will modernise mining operations across four districts: Dehradun, Haridwar, Nainital, and Udham Singh Nagar. Surveillance infrastructure, including bullet cameras, RFID radars, and LED floodlights, will be installed at 40 key check gates to ensure comprehensive monitoring. Additionally, a centralised Mining State Control Centre (MSCC) will be set up in Dehradun, supported by mini command centres in the respective districts.
Speaking on the development, Rajesh Rai, the Chairman and Managing Director of ITI Limited, underscored the project’s ecological and economic importance. He indicated that combating illegal mining would prevent environmental degradation and revenue loss while fostering accountability. Rai expressed ITI Limited’s commitment to assisting other states in implementing similar systems.
Illegal mining, a persistent issue in resource-rich regions, has led to environmental challenges such as deforestation, habitat destruction, and water pollution. Economically, it deprives governments of critical tax revenue, exacerbating financial shortfalls. The MDTSS project is designed to curb these issues using real-time surveillance, ensuring better regulation and compliance.
A turning point for Uttarakhand’s mining industry
The installation of the MDTSS is expected to yield multiple benefits. Enhanced monitoring will deter illegal activities, while the improved tracking system will facilitate efficient mineral transportation. Furthermore, the advanced surveillance technology will assist authorities in optimising resource allocation for mining operations.
ITI Limited’s expertise in telecom technology, combined with its growing portfolio of infrastructure and e-governance solutions, has positioned the company as a trusted partner in state-led development projects. Recently, ITI Limited and its consortium partner emerged as the lowest bidder for the BharatNet Phase-3 project, covering regions such as Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, and West Bengal, with a total value of ₹4,559 crore.
