Ishan Kishan shines in IPL 2024, discusses career challenges
In a thrilling Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match, wicket-keeper batter Ishan Kishan showcased his cricketing prowess, leading Mumbai Indians to a convincing victory over Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Kishan scored an impressive 69 runs from just 34 balls, playing a pivotal role in Mumbai Indians’ successful chase of a 197-run target set by RCB.
Following his spectacular performance, Kishan addressed the media, shedding light on the challenges he faced in the weeks leading up to the IPL. His future with the Indian national team had been a topic of intense speculation after he opted out of the series against South Africa due to mental fatigue. Despite advice from Indian team head coach Rahul Dravid and Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Jay Shah to participate in domestic cricket, specifically the Ranji Trophy, Kishan chose to prepare for the IPL alongside Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya.
Ishan Kishan opened up about his decision and the pressures that come with being in the spotlight. “I was practicing. When I took time off from the game, people were talking a lot. Many things came on social media. But you should also realize that many things are not in the hands of the players,” he explained, addressing the controversy surrounding his recent career decisions.
During his break from international cricket, Kishan reflected on his approach to the game and mental strategies. He noted significant changes in his mindset, which included a more measured approach to batting and greater team involvement. “The only thing you can do is utilize the time properly. Also, the mindset to think about the previous Ishan Kishan, I would never leave a delivery in the first two overs even if they are bowling well. With time I have learnt that even 20 overs is a big game, you can take your time,” Kishan remarked, detailing his growth as a player.
Ishan Kishan’s recent performance and insights provide a deep look into the mental and strategic adjustments necessary for top-level athletes. His ability to bounce back and excel in high-pressure situations, particularly in a high-stakes tournament like the IPL, underscores his resilience and adaptability. This could mark a turning point in Kishan’s career, potentially leading to greater consistency and leadership roles both in the IPL and on the international stage.
