Indian Railways teams up with USAID/India for green energy solutions

In a key move towards carbon neutrality, Indian Railways (IR) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United States Agency for International Development/India (USAID/India).

The MoU sets the stage for collaboration on clean energy and energy efficiency solutions aimed at minimizing the carbon footprint of Indian Railways.

The partnership will aid Indian Railways in its proactive quest to achieve Net Zero Carbon Emission by 2030 through a multi-pronged strategic approach.

USAID/India will provide technical assistance and support across several areas, including long-term energy planning, development of an Energy Efficiency Policy, planning for clean energy procurement, addressing regulatory and implementation barriers, bid design and management for renewable procurement, e-mobility promotion, and capacity building programs.

The signing of the MoU took place in the presence of Naveen Gulati, Member (Traction and Rolling Stock), Railway Board, Indian Railways, and Isabel Coleman, Deputy Administrator, USAID, along with Anil Kumar Lahoti, Chairman and CEO, Railway Board.

USAID is a US Government agency, which supports international development, including economic growth, agriculture, trade, clean energy, climate change mitigation, and global health. This partnership marks a significant step towards achieving Indian Railways’ mission of Net Zero Carbon Emission by 2030.
