India commissions Biaras Drass small hydropower plant in Kargil

Energy Industry News : A small 1.5MW small hydropower plant built at a cost of Rs 17 crore ($2.6 million) has been commissioned in Biaras Drass in Kargil district in the Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir, the first project to go on line under the Ladakh Renewable Energy Initiative of the Prime Minister.

Developed under the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, the Biaras Drass small hydropower plant will cover the power consumption needs of nearly 1,000 families, as per the Indian New and Renewable Energy Ministry, and in particular help them battle the extreme winter conditions. People in the area often face power cuts in winter season.

The 1500kW of Power generated from the Biaras Drass small hydropower project will be used for the Drass town in Kargill district. Drass is considered to be among the coldest areas in India.

The Indian small hydropower plant, which was developed by the Kargil Renewable Energy Development Agency (KREDA), was commissioned on 4 November and was completed financed by the Ministry. In mid-October, the Biaras Drass small hydropower plant was found to be safe against the designed hydro static pressure which led to its commissioning.
