Social media on trial! Haryana’s Minister Anil Vij vows crackdown amid communal violence
In a stunning crackdown on the recent communal violence in Nuh, Haryana‘s Home Minister Anil Vij unleashed a major offensive against social media, blaming it for fueling the recent unrest. Announcing the formation of a three-member committee to monitor social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp from July 21 onwards, Anil Vij warned that provocative posts will be scrutinized, and stringent legal action will be taken against individuals spreading hatred or misinformation.
The sensational move comes in the wake of escalating violence in Haryana’s Nuh district, where clashes erupted, leading to six deaths, including two home guards and a cleric. With the state government imposing suspension on mobile internet and SMS services in various parts, the minister’s call to use social media responsibly sends a chilling message.
Formation of Committee to Monitor Social Media Activities
An official statement quoted Minister Vij stating that social media has significantly contributed to the violence in Nuh. In a stern response to this crisis, a special committee has been assigned to closely examine all social media platforms for provocative posts. Vij urged the people of the state to act responsibly, cautioning them that the government is keeping a close watch on social media.
Communal violence in Nuh and government response
Tensions soared as a video of Bajrang Dal member Monu Manesar, accused of triggering the Nuh violence, circulated widely. Minister Vij emphasized that if Manesar had any role in the incident, he would not be spared. In a bid to contain the “intense communal tension,” the Haryana government has suspended mobile internet and SMS services in Nuh, Palwal, Faridabad, and other areas under Gurugram’s subdivisions until August 5.
Opposition’s criticism and Anil Vij’s rebuttal
While the Opposition has targeted the BJP-led Haryana government for the alleged failure of law and order, Vij responded that it’s not the time for politics, but rather for restoring peace in the state. He assured that he would answer all questions later, emphasizing that no one, no matter how small or big, involved in the violence, would be spared.
