GE Vernova, Polimex Mostostal team up for Baltica 2 offshore wind farm infrastructure in Poland
GE Vernova’s Grid Solutions business, listed under NYSE: GE, in partnership with Polimex Mostostal (PXM), announced their contract to construct the onshore infrastructure essential for the Baltica 2 project, a key phase of the Baltica Offshore Wind Farm in Poland. This collaboration focuses on establishing a 275/400 kV high voltage substation and onshore export lines crucial for integrating the generated power into the Polish Power System.
As consortium leader, GE Vernova’s Polish company, GE Power Sp. z.o.o., is set to provide vital technology, including Gas Insulated Switchgear, Transformers, and Static Synchronous Compensators (STATCOMs), essential for a stable electrical grid. Polimex Mostostal will undertake all civil work, equipment installation, and laying of the onshore export lines for the electrical substation.
Johan Bindele, head of Grid Systems Integration at GE Vernova’s Grid Solutions, emphasized the project’s significance in reinforcing GE Vernova’s commitment to renewable energy and Poland’s strategic shift to sustainable sources. Krzysztof Figat, President of the Management Board of Polimex Mostostal, also expressed enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the collaboration with GE Vernova.
The 2.5 GW Baltica Offshore Wind Farm, developed by Ørsted and PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna, is poised to be the largest in the Polish Baltic Sea and one of the largest globally. With Baltica 2 and 3 combined, it will supply clean energy to nearly four million households in Poland, significantly reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
Baltica 2, with its 1.5 GW power capacity, aims to enhance energy security in the Pomerania region and Poland, as stated by Wojciech Dąbrowski, president of the Management Board of PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna. Agata Staniewska-Bolesta, Managing Director of Ørsted Offshore Poland, also noted the project’s progress towards offshore wind energy realization in Poland.
High voltage onshore substations are critical in offshore renewable energy projects, transforming wind-generated electricity for long-distance transmission with minimal energy loss. GE Vernova’s expertise in this area is crucial for the efficient and reliable operation of such large-scale renewable energy projects.
The contract win for GE Vernova and Polimex Mostostal for the Baltica 2 project represents a significant advancement in Poland’s renewable energy infrastructure. This collaboration not only highlights the growing global trend towards sustainable energy solutions but also underscores the importance of integrating advanced technology in renewable energy projects. The project’s success will likely set a benchmark in the renewable sector, demonstrating effective collaboration between technology providers and civil construction experts.
