GE Vernova, MYTILINEOS bag £1bn contract for UK’s first high-capacity subsea link

In a major leap forward for the United Kingdom’s renewable energy efforts, GE Vernova’s Grid Solutions business and MYTILINEOS Energy & Metals have announced their selection for a £1 billion contract by National Grid Electricity Transmission and SP Transmission, part of SP Energy Networks (SPEN). This contract involves the creation of the UK’s first high-capacity east coast subsea link.

EGL1 Project: A Milestone in Renewable Energy Transmission

The GE Vernova–MYTILINEOS consortium will supply and construct two High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) converter stations for the Eastern Green Link 1 (EGL1) project. EGL1, a joint venture between National Grid Electricity Transmission and SP Transmission, is set to oversee the construction of a 525kV, 2GW bipole Voltage-Sourced Converter (VSC) and HVDC subsea transmission cable. Spanning from Torness in East Lothian, Scotland to Hawthorn Pit in County Durham, England, this project is pivotal in transmitting renewable green energy to power over two million homes in the UK.

Advanced HVDC Technology Integration

The HVDC cable system, approximately 190km in length, represents the latest in HVDC technology. VSC technology provides an efficient and reliable means of transmitting large amounts of power over long distances subsea. GE Vernova, as the consortium leader, alongside MYTILINEOS, will undertake the engineering works and technology provision for the two VSC HVDC converter stations. These stations are essential in converting direct current to alternating current, thereby enabling the transmission of electricity into the onshore network.

Timeline and Project Details

The design phase is scheduled to begin in January 2024, with construction set to commence in 2025. This project marks a critical step in the UK’s decarbonization and energy security efforts. Philippe Piron, President and CEO of GE Vernova’s Grid Solutions, expressed honor in being awarded the HVDC contract for EGL1 and recognized the project’s significance in utilizing GE Vernova’s advanced HVDC technology.
