GAIL (India) Limited, a Maharatna public sector company, recently expanded its commitment to public health by launching two Mobile Medical Units (MMUs) and providing an advanced life support ambulance to AIIMS, New Delhi. The initiative, part of GAIL’s flagship Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative “Project Arogya,” was flagged off in New Delhi by Member of Parliament Bansuri Swaraj. The launch witnessed the presence of GAIL’s Director (HR), Shri Ayush Gupta, and AIIMS Director Dr. M Srinivas.

The MMUs are designed to offer free primary healthcare services to underprivileged communities, addressing gaps in accessibility to public healthcare systems. Equipped with a qualified medical team, these units will provide consultations, medicines, and diagnostic tests for approximately 80 patients daily. This effort aims to alleviate the burden of medical expenses for underserved populations, especially the elderly and physically challenged individuals who face challenges accessing distant healthcare facilities.

As part of its innovative approach, GAIL’s mobile medical units are GPS-tracked and operate under the ADCR (Awareness, Diagnosis, Cure, and Referral) model. The service also integrates Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) activities to foster awareness about hygiene and health. In addition to medical consultations, these units distribute low-cost sanitary napkins, extending their impact to address pressing public health issues.

The advanced life support ambulance provided to AIIMS, New Delhi, is expected to enhance the hospital’s emergency response capabilities significantly. This gesture aligns with GAIL’s broader mission of supporting community health infrastructure and its long-standing reputation for impactful CSR initiatives.

Currently, GAIL operates 50 MMUs across 25 districts in 12 states, reinforcing its role as a catalyst for accessible healthcare. The newly added units aim to expand these services further, underscoring the company’s dedication to fostering sustainable development and improving public health outcomes.

Experts emphasise that such initiatives bridge crucial gaps in healthcare, particularly in rural areas where access to medical facilities remains limited. By incorporating diagnostic tools and awareness campaigns, GAIL’s Project Arogya not only addresses immediate healthcare needs but also works towards long-term behavioural change in underserved communities.
