Duke Energy Renewables has started commercial operations at the 350MW Frontier Windpower II project in Kay County, Oklahoma.
The Frontier Windpower II project is an expansion of the 200MW Frontier Windpower project, which has been in operations since 2016.
The two wind farms in Oklahoma put together can power nearly 193,000 average-size households.
Powered by 74 4.8-MW wind turbines from Nordex Group, the Frontier Windpower II project will meet the power requirements of nearly 123,000 average homes.
Frontier Windpower II project backed by 15-year VPPAs
The wind farm is underpinned by 15-year virtual power purchase agreements (VPPAs) with AT&T and Ball Corporation for capacities of 160MW and 161MW, respectively.
According to Duke Energy, the VPPAs will settle on an as-generated basis tied to the real-time energy output of the Frontier Windpower II wind farm.
Chris Fallon – president of Duke Energy Renewables said: “We’re pleased to be working with AT&T and Ball Corporation on the Frontier II project, which is located in an area that has some of the best wind resources in the country.
“This project further demonstrates how we can address the community’s need for clean energy resources, while providing unique sustainability solutions for our customers.”
Amshore Renewable Energy provided development support for the Frontier Windpower II project, while Wanzek Construction was the contractor.
