Ethiopian Airlines names Dar Al-Handasah and Zaha Hadid Architects for Africa’s largest airport design

Ethiopian Airlines Group has unveiled plans to construct Africa’s largest airport in Abusera, a pivotal element of its 15-year strategy to become a leading global aviation force. The development is set to redefine Ethiopian Airlines’ operational capacity, catering to anticipated growth and expanding its international footprint.

The new airport in Abusera is designed to handle 60 million passengers annually by 2029, almost three times the capacity of Africa’s current busiest airport. As the project progresses, it will ultimately support up to 110 million passengers per year, surpassing Bole International Airport’s current capacity by a significant margin. The strategic location of Abusera, with its lower altitude, promises to enhance aircraft take-off performance, making it an efficient hub for both regional and international flights. Additionally, an express rail link to Addis Ababa will improve connectivity, further solidifying the airport’s role as a central transit point in the region.
