Energy Vault, NV Energy launch Reid Gardner Battery Energy Storage System

Energy Vault Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: NRGV), a pioneer in sustainable grid-scale energy storage solutions, alongside NV Energy, Nevada’s leading public utility, have announced the completion and commencement of commercial operations of the Reid Gardner Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Moapa, Nevada. This significant development represents a key advancement in energy storage technology and supports the transition towards renewable energy sources in the region.

Located at the site of a former coal-fired electric generating facility, the newly operational 220MW/440MWh grid-tied BESS is now one of the largest of its kind in Nevada. The facility boasts a 2-hour energy storage capacity designed to efficiently store and dispatch excess renewable energy, particularly wind and solar power. By charging and discharging daily, the BESS aims to dispatch stored renewable energy during peak consumption hours, aligning with Nevada’s high demand periods and contributing to grid stability and efficiency.

The BESS utilizes Energy Vault’s integration platform and its proprietary energy management system, Vault-OS, to optimize performance. According to Marco Terruzzin, Chief Commercial & Product Officer at Energy Vault, the project’s completion “on budget and on schedule in a compressed time schedule” is a testament to Energy Vault’s commitment to delivering high-performance energy storage systems. Terruzzin emphasized the company’s goal to become the energy storage solution provider of choice for utilities, independent power producers (IPPs), and large energy users.

Jimmy Daghlian, Vice President of Renewables at NV Energy, lauded Energy Vault’s dedication and efficiency in ensuring the BESS was operational in time to meet summer demands. He highlighted the swift construction process and Energy Vault’s prioritization of the project, which facilitated the early completion and operational start.

The Reid Gardner BESS not only enhances grid resilience but also supports Nevada’s carbon neutrality goals by integrating large-scale renewable energy into the state’s power infrastructure. This project sets a precedent for using advanced energy storage technologies to stabilize the grid and manage energy loads more effectively, particularly in areas transitioning from traditional fossil fuel sources to renewable energy.

As both companies continue their collaboration, this project underscores the potential of energy storage systems to play a pivotal role in modernizing grid infrastructure and advancing sustainable energy practices across the United States.
