Energy Vault, Carbosulcis to develop 100MW hybrid gravity energy storage system in Sardinia

Energy Vault Holdings, Inc. and Carbosulcis S.p.A. are set to develop a groundbreaking 100 megawatt (MW) Hybrid Gravity Energy Storage System at Italy’s largest former coal mining site in Sardinia. This ambitious project aims to transform the retired coal mine into a cutting-edge Renewable Energy Technology Hub, enhancing Sardinia’s green energy capabilities and supporting local economic revitalisation.

The new energy storage system will utilise Energy Vault’s innovative EV0 modular pumped hydro gravity storage technology, combined with lithium-ion batteries. This hybrid energy storage system, powered by VaultOS energy management software, will be deployed within 500-meter-deep shafts at the former coal mine owned by the Sardinia Regional Government. The project, following a land lease agreement signed in July 2024, marks a significant step towards Sardinia’s goal of converting the site into a hub for carbon-free technology.

Francesco Lippi, Chief Executive Officer of Carbosulcis, expressed enthusiasm for the project, noting that the innovative hybrid energy storage solution will not only support the conversion of the coal mine into a technology hub but also enhance the stability of Sardinia’s power grid. Lippi highlighted the project’s potential to maximise the use of renewable energy and contribute to the island’s “smart transition” towards a carbon-free future.
