Enel Green Power Espana breaks ground on 84.7MW Totana solar farm in Spain

Solar industry news : Green Power Espana (EGPE), the renewable company of Endesa, has broken ground on the 84.7MW in the in southeastern Spain.

The new Spanish solar farm, which is being built with an investment of nearly €59 million, is slated to begin operation in Q3 2019, said Endesa, a Spanish electric utility that is majority owned by Italian energy company Enel.

Upon being fully operational, the Totana solar farm, which will be made up of 248,000 photovoltaic modules, is expected to produce nearly 150 GWh per year of solar power. The Spanish solar power plant will help in offsetting about 105,000 tons a year of CO2 emissions.

The Totana solar power plant is the first of the seven solar projects that were awarded to Enel Green Power Espana at Spain’s third renewable tender held in July 2017. Put together, the seven Spanish solar farms have a total capacity of 339MW.

According to Endesa, the Totana solar farm is the only one to be built in the Region of Murcia, while the other six solar projects will all be located in Extremadura in western Spain.

Commenting on the construction on the Totana solar farm, Antonio Cammisecra – Enel’s Head of Global business line, Enel Green Power (EGP), said: “With the Totana solar PV project, the Group confirms its commitment to further strengthening Spain’s generation mix, bringing the country closer to its renewable goals.

“Our operations in Spain have allowed us to establish a significant presence in this important and competitive market, where we will continue to deploy our sustainable leadership.”

Apart from the 339MW solar power projects, Enel Green Power Espana is also engaged in developing 540MW of wind farms in Spain. Altogether, the solar power plants and wind farms being developed by the Endesa renewable company will see a total investment of over €800m by 2020.
