Dubai inaugurates world’s largest concentrated solar power project
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, has inaugurated the largest concentrated solar power (CSP) project globally. This monumental launch takes place within the 4th phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park in Dubai.
A Vision for Sustainability
“The UAE has a clear vision to transform itself into one of the world’s most sustainable nations,” stated Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. He emphasized the UAE’s journey towards sustainability, integrating advanced clean energy projects from various renewable sources. The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park is central to this vision, showcasing Dubai and the UAE’s commitment to building an environmentally friendly future.
Pioneering Technology and Capacity
The project’s fourth phase sprawls over 44 square kilometres and utilizes three hybrid technologies: a 600MW parabolic basin complex, a 100MW CSP tower, and 250MW from photovoltaic solar panels. With an investment of AED15.78 billion under the independent power producer (IPP) model, the project boasts the world’s tallest solar tower, measuring 263.126 metres, and the largest thermal energy storage capacity at 5,907 megawatt hours (MWh). This feat is acknowledged by the Guinness World Records, further featuring 70,000 heliostats that track the sun.
Impactful Benefits and Partnerships
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), shared that the project would provide clean and sustainable energy to approximately 320,000 residences. It’s set to reduce carbon emissions by about 1.6 million tonnes annually. This initiative reinforces Dubai’s role as a leader in renewable energy and climate action. The project is a collaborative effort led by DEWA and Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power, with Noor Energy 1 established as the project company. DEWA holds a 51% stake, ACWA Power 25%, and the Chinese Silk Road Fund 24%.
A Milestone for Global Sustainability
The inauguration of this phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park marks a significant milestone in the global pursuit of sustainable and clean energy. It exemplifies the UAE’s commitment to innovative solutions in energy and environmental stewardship, paving the way for future sustainable projects worldwide.
