Driver dies after car crashes into White House perimeter gate
A car crash at the White House’s exterior perimeter gate late on May 4 resulted in the driver’s death, according to a US Secret Service statement. The incident took place at approximately 10:30 p.m., as the vehicle was traveling at a high speed and collided with an outer perimeter gate on Pennsylvania Avenue NW near 15th Street.
Secret Service Investigates the Crash
Anthony Guglielmi, spokesperson for the US Secret Service, confirmed that security protocols were immediately implemented. Officers secured the area, cleared the vehicle, and attempted to render aid to the driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Secret Service emphasized that “there was no threat to the White House,” and added that the fatal crash portion will be handed over to the Washington Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Investigations Unit.
No Threat to the White House
The White House security protocols ensured that the building and its occupants were not endangered. The Secret Service will continue its own investigation in collaboration with the Washington Metropolitan Police and Fire Departments.
Previous Trespassing Incidents
The White House has experienced several trespassing incidents in recent years. Authorities arrested a man in January after he rammed his vehicle into the exterior gate, leading to the installation of a taller, sturdier fence in 2020. Enhanced security measures remain in place around the White House perimeter to prevent unauthorized access.
The immediate response from the US Secret Service and coordination with local law enforcement highlight the importance of rapid action in securing sensitive locations. Ensuring the safety of key government institutions remains paramount.
