DEME has been awarded two significant contracts valued over €300 million from Prysmian, a leader in cable solutions, to undertake the engineering and installation of the IJmuiden Ver Alpha and Nederwiek 1 offshore grid systems in the Netherlands. This venture marks the largest cabling project in DEME’s history and its inaugural project utilizing Prysmian’s innovative 525 kV HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) cable technology, which allows for greater transmission capacity.
The contracts will see DEME delivering a comprehensive suite of services, including the installation of two 12-kilometer long 525 kV HVDC cable systems within the Veerse Meer lake and an additional 126 kilometers of the same cable system offshore. These operations form part of DEME’s integrated solutions approach, encompassing not only cable installation but also extensive marine infrastructure works, landfall, rock placement, and dredging activities.
Work on these critical infrastructure projects is set to commence in stages starting from 2025. The IJmuiden Ver Alpha and Nederwiek 1 grid systems, operated by TenneT, aim to connect upcoming offshore wind farms in the Dutch North Sea to the mainland in the province of Zeeland, with the first connection set to become operational by 2029 and the second by 2030.
Philip Scheers, Business Unit Director at DEME Offshore, expressed pride in collaborating with Prysmian on this significant initiative, which will ultimately contribute 4 GW of clean energy to the region. He highlighted, “This multidisciplinary project showcases the benefits of working with DEME. Our expertise in cable installation, dredging, rock placement, and marine infrastructure works allows us to offer our clients an efficient, integrated solution.” DEME plans to deploy a variety of specialized vessels from its fleet, including cable installation vessels, hopper dredgers, and a fallpipe vessel, all operated by skilled crews.
