Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal sent to CBI’s judicial custody for 14 days
In a significant development, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was sent to judicial custody until July 12, 2024, by the Rouse Avenue Court of Delhi as part of the ongoing investigation into the alleged excise policy irregularities. The decision, made by Vacation Judge Sunena Sharma, follows allegations by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) that Kejriwal was uncooperative during police custody, providing evasive answers when confronted with evidence.
Advocate DP Singh, representing the CBI, argued that Kejriwal failed to adequately explain the increase in profit margins for wholesalers from 5% to 12% under the new Excise Policy of Delhi 2021-22, a change implemented without apparent justification or study. The accusations extend to alleged misconduct during the COVID-19 pandemic, with Kejriwal reportedly expediting cabinet approvals for the revised Excise Policy to benefit certain groups, purportedly involving illegal gratifications linked to the liquor business.
This custody decision follows a series of investigations by the CBI, where it was suggested that Kejriwal might influence witnesses or tamper with evidence due to his influential political position. The complexities of the case have been highlighted by various stakeholders, including Kejriwal’s defense team, who contested the grounds of his arrest and the manner in which the investigations have been conducted.
During previous court proceedings, Kejriwal refuted claims made by the CBI regarding statements against his colleagues and asserted his and his party’s innocence. His legal team, led by Senior Advocate Vikram Chaudhari, criticized the timing and basis of his arrest, suggesting it was strategically planned around his bail proceedings.
The case against Arvind Kejriwal raises critical questions about political accountability and the efficacy of judicial processes in high-profile corruption cases. It underscores the need for transparent and fair legal proceedings, especially when involving high-ranking government officials.
