Curragh coal mine : Thiess secures A$1.3bn contract extension from Coronado

Curragh coal mine : CIMIC Group through its unit Thiess has secured a six-year, A$1.3 billion contract extension from Coronado Global Resources to provide mining services at the Curragh Mine in Queensland, Australia.

The mining services contract involves overburden removal and haulage, mining and run of mine rehandling services, equipment maintenance and pit dewatering.

Since 2004, Thiess has been operating at the Curragh coal mine located in the metallurgical coal-rich Bowen Basin.

Michael Wright – CEO, CIMIC Group, commenting on the Curragh coal mine contract, said: “Thiess has a consistent record of exceeding our client’s expectations at the mine, through a focus on operational excellence and innovation, and an unrelenting commitment to safety culture and outcomes at Curragh.

“This contract extension reflects Thiess’ ongoing ability of creating lasting value for its clients.”

The new contract is in addition to Thiess’s existing scope of work — the operation and maintenance of the client-owned 1400 ton electric rope shovel and ultra-class trucking fleet.

Douglas Thompson – managing director, Thiess, on the contract related to the Curragh coal mine, said: “We are delighted to be continuing our partnership with Coronado Resources.

“Thiess has operated at Curragh for more than 15 years.

“Over that time, we’ve developed a deep understanding of the site and its operations, helping to deliver optimal efficiency, productivity and cost performance.”

Other CIMIC Group subsidiaries Sedgman and UGL are providing various operations and maintenance contracts at the Curragh coal mine.
