Convenience store giant Alimentation Couche-Tard to snap up GetGo Café + Market in mega deal
Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc. has announced a significant move in the convenience retail sector with its acquisition of GetGo Café + Market stores from Giant Eagle Inc. The deal, which is expected to finalize in 2025 subject to regulatory approvals, marks a major expansion for Couche-Tard in the U.S. market.
GetGo Café + Market is renowned for its innovative approach to convenience retail, offering a blend of high-quality food service and traditional convenience store features. With approximately 270 locations across Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Maryland, and Indiana, GetGo serves a diverse customer base through its range of store formats, from expansive open-concept stores to compact stand-alone kiosks. The chain is distinguished by its emphasis on fresh, made-to-order food, catering to the growing consumer preference for high-quality, on-the-go dining options.
Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc., a global leader in convenience and mobility with operations in more than 25 countries, views this acquisition as a strategic enhancement to its portfolio. Brian Hannasch, President and Chief Executive Officer of Couche-Tard, expressed excitement about integrating GetGo into the company’s operations. Hannasch praised GetGo’s strong market presence, its dedicated customer base, and its successful food service model. He highlighted Couche-Tard’s commitment to maintaining the high standards and innovative spirit that have defined GetGo’s success.
Giant Eagle Inc. sees the sale as an opportunity to refocus on its core supermarket and pharmacy operations. Bill Artman, Chief Executive Officer of Giant Eagle, stated that the transaction would enable the company to strengthen its core business areas while aligning GetGo with a partner well-suited to advance its convenience store operations. Artman emphasized that Couche-Tard’s extensive experience and expertise in convenience retail would benefit both GetGo’s customers and employees, and expressed enthusiasm about the continued partnership on the myPerks loyalty program, a key element of GetGo’s customer engagement strategy.
The acquisition deal will be financed through Couche-Tard’s available cash and existing credit facilities, including its U.S. Commercial Paper Program. The financial terms of the transaction have not been disclosed. This move is part of Couche-Tard’s broader strategy to expand its footprint in the U.S. convenience market, reflecting its ongoing efforts to enhance its competitive position and diversify its portfolio.
This acquisition positions Couche-Tard to leverage GetGo’s established presence in key U.S. markets and to integrate its innovative food service model into its broader convenience retail strategy. In addition to the GetGo acquisition, Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc. has recently submitted a non-binding proposal to Seven & i Holdings Co., Ltd. for a potential transaction. This proposal aligns with Couche-Tard’s strategy of pursuing growth opportunities and strategic partnerships. However, the company has noted that there is no certainty of reaching an agreement and will provide further updates only if and when a definitive agreement is reached.
