Consumption of soda or other sweetened beverages reduces chances to conceive

A new study warns that the couples want to should reduce the consumption of soda and other sugar sweetened as intake of such drinks can reduce the chances when they plan to have a baby.

The study revealed that the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages by both the male and female was associated with the reduced fecundability by about 20% which is average monthly probability of conception.

Females who took at least one soda per day had 25% lower fecundability and the male consumption was associated with 33% lower fecundability.

Elizabeth Hatch, Professor at the Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH), the lead author said: “We found positive associations between intake of sugar-sweetened beverages and lower , which were consistent after controlling for many other factors, including obesity, caffeine intake, alcohol, smoking, and overall diet quality,”.

In a paper published in the journal Epidemiology, he said: “Couples planning a pregnancy might consider limiting their consumption of these beverages, especially because they are also related to other adverse health effects,”.

Consumption of energy drinks may lead to larger reduction of fertility as the results were based on small number of people. They also found association between consumption fruit juice or diet soda and to fertility.

It was earlier revealed that intake of sweetened beverages result in weight gain, Type 2 diabetes early menstruation and poor quality of semen.

The study was conducted on 3828 women aged between 21 to 45 living in US or Canada and 1045 male partners of them.
