Chevron’s new renewable gasoline blend could slash your car’s emissions – Find out how
Toyota Logistics Services recently marked a milestone in sustainable automotive fuel with a special delivery from Chevron: 4,000 gallons of a groundbreaking renewable gasoline blend. This innovative fuel, which contains over 50% renewable content, aims to significantly lower carbon emissions compared to conventional gasoline. The delivery is part of Chevron’s and Toyota’s broader commitment to advancing eco-friendly technologies in the automotive sector.
Chevron’s renewable gasoline blend was introduced at the Port of Portland, where it was stored in an existing fuel tank. On April 11, 2024, the blend was used for the “first fill” of newly arrived Toyota vehicles. This process involves filling the fuel tanks of new cars with the renewable blend before they are distributed to dealers. The move reflects both companies’ dedication to reducing the carbon footprint associated with vehicle operations.
The development of this renewable gasoline blend is a testament to the collaboration between Chevron and Toyota. Izadyar Dalvand, an engine laboratory operations supervisor at Chevron’s Richmond Engine Laboratory, played a crucial role in developing the blend. His team worked on creating a product that not only reduces carbon intensity but also maintains high performance. Dalvand highlighted the significance of this achievement, noting the effort involved in bringing the renewable blend to fruition. According to him, “It took two years and several teams coming together to make this happen. It was the lab’s largest delivery of our renewable gasoline blend.”
In addition to its introduction at the Port of Portland, Chevron demonstrated the renewable gasoline blend on a 1,000-mile road trip in July 2023. During this test, three Toyota vehicles—a Camry, a RAV4, and a Tundra—traveled through various southeastern U.S. terrains and weather conditions. The road trip aimed to validate the blend’s performance and reliability in real-world scenarios.
The renewable gasoline blend is expected to play a significant role in reducing the carbon intensity of existing vehicles. Given that a vehicle purchased today could still be operational in the 2040s, fuels like this blend can contribute to a more sustainable future without requiring major changes to existing vehicles.
Chevron’s Andy Walz, President of Chevron Americas Products, emphasized the importance of supportive policies for scaling up renewable fuel production. He advocates for well-designed policies that can facilitate broader availability of renewable fuels to consumers and contribute to a reduction in overall carbon emissions.
Chevron’s renewable gasoline blend represents a significant advancement in the pursuit of sustainable automotive fuels. The collaboration with Toyota not only highlights the blend’s potential to reduce emissions but also sets the stage for future developments in renewable fuel technology. As this blend progresses toward wider availability, it could mark a substantial step forward in achieving a lower-carbon future for the automotive industry.
