CBI raids Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra’s home in cash-for-query case

In a significant development, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted a search at the Kolkata residence of Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra as part of the ongoing investigation into the cash-for-query case. This action comes on the heels of the CBI registering a First Information Report (FIR) against Moitra, signaling an escalation in the scrutiny of the allegations leveled against her.

The anti-corruption watchdog, Lokpal, earlier this week directed the CBI to probe the allegations against Moitra, with instructions to submit a comprehensive report within six months. Furthermore, the CBI has been tasked to file monthly status reports on the investigation’s progress. The allegations, described by Lokpal as “extremely serious in nature,” pertain to Moitra’s conduct in her capacity as a public servant, supported by what has been characterized as cogent evidence.

Mahua Moitra’s expulsion from the Lok Sabha in December of the previous year marked a dramatic turn in the case. An ethics panel concluded that Moitra should be removed following accusations of accepting bribes from businessman Darshan Hiranandani in exchange for posing questions critical of the Narendra Modi government in Parliament. Additionally, Moitra faced allegations regarding the unauthorized sharing of confidential parliamentary website log-in credentials, purportedly allowing Hiranandani to submit questions directly.

Despite the gravity of the bribery allegations, Moitra has vehemently denied these charges. However, she acknowledged the sharing of log-in details, a practice she claims is commonplace among Members of Parliament. Moitra has taken legal action against her expulsion, challenging the decision in the Supreme Court.

The case against Mahua Moitra underscores the ongoing challenges of maintaining integrity and accountability within the political landscape. As the investigation unfolds, it remains to be seen how these developments will impact Moitra’s political career and the broader discourse on corruption and ethics in public service.
