Carnival Corporation & plc powers sustainable cruising in Dominican Republic with new solar park
Carnival Corporation & plc (NYSE/LSE: CCL; NYSE: CUK), the world’s leading cruise company, has taken a significant step towards sustainability with the inauguration of a groundbreaking solar park at Amber Cove Cruise Center in the Dominican Republic. This ambitious initiative is set to meet 80% of the port’s energy needs, showcasing the company’s dedication to eco-friendly practices.
The solar park, equipped with over 1,800 solar panels, marks a pivotal moment in the cruise industry’s shift towards renewable energy sources. This move not only underscores Carnival Corporation’s environmental stewardship but also aligns with global efforts to combat climate change. The ribbon-cutting ceremony saw the attendance of notable figures, including Joel Santos, the Dominican Republic’s Minister of the Presidency, and Christine Duffy, President of Carnival Cruise Line, highlighting the project’s significance.
Christine Duffy emphasized the dual goal of enriching guests’ experiences while prioritizing environmental responsibility. “As we bring guests to enjoy the beauty and rich culture of the Dominican Republic, we also take our environmental stewardship here and everywhere we visit very seriously,” Duffy stated, underscoring the project’s role in powering the port’s needs sustainably.
Joel Santos lauded the initiative, noting its contribution to Puerto Plata’s status as a leader in clean energy production and environmental sustainability. This collaboration between Carnival Corporation and the Dominican government exemplifies the potential for tourism and environmental preservation to coexist harmoniously.
The transition to solar energy is expected to significantly reduce the port’s reliance on fossil fuels, thereby lowering greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 1,000 tons annually. This reduction is equivalent to the environmental benefit of planting over 30,000 trees, illustrating the substantial impact of adopting renewable energy.
Amber Cove Cruise Center, located near the historic town of Puerto Plata, stands as a testament to Carnival Corporation’s commitment to sustainable tourism. The port, which welcomes guests from Carnival Cruise Line, Costa Cruises, Holland America Line, and Princess Cruises, offers a blend of leisure and adventure activities within an environmentally conscious framework.
Carnival Corporation & plc‘s portfolio, featuring some of the most recognized cruise lines globally, continues to pioneer in integrating sustainability into its operations. This solar park project is a reflection of the company’s broader commitment to reducing its environmental footprint and leading the cruise industry towards a more sustainable future.
