Bullet-riddled celebration: Two lives cut short in mass shooting in Baltimore
In a shocking incident, an 18-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man were killed, with 28 others injured at a block party in Baltimore, according to official reports.
Among the injured, nine people were urgently transported from the scene to nearby hospitals while 20 others walked into hospitals themselves. It was reported that three of the injured were in critical condition.
The younger victim was confirmed dead at the scene, while the 20-year-old succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center is currently treating twelve of the injured, with an additional four patients at the hospital’s pediatric emergency department, according to a statement from Michael Schwartzberg, the University of Maryland Medical System spokesman.
After receiving multiple calls post-midnight, Baltimore police arrived to find the tragic scene. The incident has been described as an extensive crime scene by Richard Worley, Baltimore’s Acting Police Commissioner, with no immediate information on possible suspects or motives.
Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott, condemned the incident as a reckless, cowardly act, highlighting the irreversible damage it had done to numerous lives. The block party was held to celebrate Baltimore’s Brooklyn neighborhood, which Scott described as a working-class neighborhood full of immense pride. He further emphasized that the neighborhood, despite its troubles, had seen significant efforts from community members striving for success and change.
Mayor Scott stressed on the urgency of dealing with the illegal guns issue, given its role in the tragedy, and urged anyone with information to assist the investigation. Speaking directly to the perpetrator, Scott asserted that the city would not rest until the culprit was found, adding a poignant note hoping the perpetrator would be constantly reminded of the lives taken and those impacted.
