In a heart-wrenching incident in Charlotte, North Carolina, three law enforcement officers from a US marshals task force were shot dead while executing a warrant. The violent confrontation, which occurred on Monday (April 29), also left several other officers wounded, one critically.
The fatal event unfolded around 1:30 pm when the task force, comprising one marshal and two local officers, approached a residence to serve a warrant on a convicted felon suspected of unlawly possessing a firearm. According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings, the situation escalated rapidly as the suspect opened fire with a high-powered rifle, leading to a fierce shootout that resulted in the suspect’s death and multiple officers injured.
Following the shootout, emergency services rushed to the scene, and multiple victims were transported to nearby hospitals. The home was eventually cleared, and two individuals, including a 17-year-old, were detained. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department issued a statement on X (formerly Twitter), urging residents to stay indoors and avoid the area.
Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles and Governor Roy Cooper expressed their condolences and emphasized the bravery of the officers involved. “These are people that cared deeply about what they’ve done for our profession, and now today, we have to say to them, ‘How much we are grateful for what they have done,'” Mayor Lyles stated at a press conference.
