Boskalis launches large-scale shore power facility in Rotterdam for sustainable operations
In a significant move towards sustainable maritime operations, Boskalis commissioned a large-scale shore power facility at its Waalhaven premises in Rotterdam. This innovative facility, crucial for the demobilization of Boskalis vessels, marks a transition from diesel-powered generators to green shore power, enhancing environmental sustainability.
Impressive Environmental Impact
The new shore power installation, operated in collaboration with Rotterdam Shore Power – a joint venture between Eneco and Port of Rotterdam – is set to generate 2 GWh of green electricity annually. This shift is expected to result in an impressive reduction of 1,600 tons of CO2 each year, significantly improving air quality by cutting down on particulate matter and nitrogen emissions. Moreover, the initiative contributes to a better living environment through reduced noise levels.
Rotterdam’s Ambitious Green Goals
This facility is the second installation by Rotterdam Shore Power, underlining Eneco and Port of Rotterdam’s commitment to greening the port. The strategic plan includes equipping a vast majority of offshore vessels, ferries, cruise liners, roll-on/roll-off ships, and container vessels with shore power by 2030. This move will potentially save around 200,000 tonnes of CO2 and 2,500 tonnes of nitric oxide annually, furthering Rotterdam’s goal of a cleaner port.
In-House Development and Collaborative Efforts
Boskalis, known for its innovative approaches, realized the grid connection for the shore power installation in-house. The facility is owned by Rotterdam Shore Power and receives its green power supply from Eneco’s Dutch wind and solar sources. This project is co-financed by the municipality of Rotterdam and the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund, showcasing a collaborative effort towards environmental stewardship.
