Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) announced a significant milestone in India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, revealing the successful manufacture of the country’s first set of Catalysts for Selective Catalyst Reactors (SCR). These SCR catalysts are pivotal in limiting Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) emissions from thermal power plants. Previously, such catalysts were imported, making this an extraordinary achievement for BHEL and Indian manufacturing.
Flagging Off the Catalysts for Yadadri Thermal Power Station in Telangana
Renuka Gera, Director (Industrial Systems & Products), BHEL, officially flagged off the first set of these indigenously manufactured SCR catalysts. The SCR catalysts are designated for the 5×800 MW Yadadri Thermal Power Station in Telangana. The event took place at BHEL’s Solar Business Division (SBD) unit in Bengaluru, with the presence of key personnel including Pankaj Gupta, Executive Director, SBD; Anil Joshi, Executive Director, Industry Sector, and other SBD employees.
State-of-the-Art Facility for SCR Catalyst Manufacturing at BHEL
BHEL has established a state-of-the-art facility at its SBD unit to produce SCR catalysts for NOx abatement in thermal power stations. This development is in line with the Ministry of Environment and Forest’s directives for combating the detrimental environmental effects of NOx emissions. Several power companies, such as TSGENCO, MAHAGENCO, WBPDCL, and NALCO, have already placed orders for these SCR catalysts, signifying the market’s trust in BHEL’s initiative.
BHEL’s Commitment to Environmental Protection
BHEL’s commitment to environmental protection extends beyond this landmark achievement. The company offers a comprehensive range of environment-friendly technologies for thermal power plants, including high-efficiency boilers, electrostatic precipitators, and Flue Gas Desulphurisation units. The SCR catalyst technology has been indigenized by BHEL, absorbed from market leader NANO, Republic of Korea.
Conclusion: A Milestone in Indian Manufacturing and Environmental Protection
BHEL’s latest accomplishment serves as a testament to India’s manufacturing capabilities and underscores the country’s commitment to environmental protection. By producing the first indigenously manufactured SCR catalysts, BHEL not only supports the ‘Make in India’ initiative but also contributes significantly to reducing NOx emissions in India’s thermal power plants.
