BDL breaks ground on environmental testing facility at Visakhapatnam unit

Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), an Indian government-owned ammunitions and missile systems manufacturer, has started construction on an environmental testing facility at the Visakhapatnam unit.

The environmental test facility will have a vibration testing facility, walking chamber, and thermal chamber for a whole Torpedo. It will enable the simultaneous execution of vibration test of the whole Torpedo of 8m length and two tons of weight.

The BDL Visakhapatnam unit of BDL was exclusively established for manufacturing Torpedoes and other underwater weapons for the Indian Navy.

The manufacturing process involves multiple environmental Tests such as vibration tests which are undertaken in a real time simulated situation to evaluate the functionality.

Commodore Siddharth Mishra (Retd), CMD, BDL said: “The Environmental Test facility will be first of its kind in the country and which will contribute towards further realization of ‘Atmanirbharta’ in Defence sector. The facility, once operational, will enhance BDL’s capability in the testing infrastructure for Torpedoes and underwater weapons.”
