Badger Hollow solar farm : Wisconsin’s largest solar project now fully operational

Madison Gas and Electric (MGE) and We Energies have reached a milestone in renewable energy with the completion of the Badger Hollow Solar Farm, the largest solar project in Wisconsin.

Badger Hollow Solar Farm, a 300-megawatt renewable energy facility, has completed its final panels and is now fully operational.

The project will power approximately 90,000 homes, featuring 830,000 solar panels that track the sun throughout the day.

Badger Hollow Solar Farm, located near Montfort and Cobb in Iowa County, Wisconsin, came online in two phases. The first 150-megawatt phase became operational in December 2021, with the second phase starting last month. The farm’s capacity to power about 90,000 homes signifies a substantial contribution to Wisconsin’s renewable energy portfolio.

The solar facility is equipped with advanced technology, including panels that capture solar energy on both sides, enhancing efficiency even in winter conditions. This technological feature makes the Badger Hollow project a frontrunner in innovative renewable energy solutions.

Jeff Keebler, MGE Chairman, President, and CEO, highlighted the collaborative effort: “The completion of Badger Hollow is another step in our ongoing transition to greater use of cost-effective, carbon-free renewable energy.” He emphasized MGE’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions for all electric customers.

We Energies and Madison Gas and Electric jointly own the second phase of Badger Hollow, with We Energies owning 100 MW and MGE 50 MW. The first phase is owned similarly by We Energies’ sister company, Wisconsin Public Service, and MGE.

Madison Gas and Electric, serving 161,000 customers in Dane County, Wis., and distributing natural gas to 173,000 customers, is known for its long-standing presence in the Madison area, dating back over 150 years.

The completion of the Badger Hollow Solar Farm by Madison Gas and Electric and We Energies represents a significant stride in Wisconsin’s journey towards sustainable and clean energy. This project not only demonstrates the potential of renewable energy in meeting the state’s power needs but also underscores the commitment of local utilities to environmental stewardship and innovation.
