Vestas wins turbine contract from Eolus for Backhammar Wind Farm in Sweden
Wind industry news : Danish wind turbine manufacturer Vestas has won a contract from Swedish wind power developer Eolus to supply 31 turbines for the 130MW Backhammar Wind Farm to be built in Varmland, Sweden.
Under the contract, Vestas will deliver 22 of its V136-4.2 MW turbines and nine of its V150-4.2 MW turbines for the new Swedish wind farm.
The Danish wind turbine manufacturer, which will handle the installation and commissioning of the wind turbines, has also agreed for the servicing of the wind turbines under a 15-year Active Output Management 5000 (AOM 5000) service agreement.

The Backhammar Wind Farm will come up between the Kristinehamn and Degerfors municipalities, located in the central part of Sweden. It will feature VestasOnline Business SCADA solution, which has been designed to reduce turbine downtime and optimize the energy output from the wind turbines.
Eolus, which offloaded the Backhammar Wind Farm recently to KGAL for €131 million, will construct the Swedish wind project on behalf of the investment and asset manager.
Expected to break ground in the course of this year, the Backhammar Wind Farm is targeted to be commissioned for mid 2020.
Eolus had worked with Vestas before this contract on Swedish wind projects having a combined capacity of around 900MW. Vestas, which has placed more than 3,300MW of wind turbines in Sweden, says that the new contract from Eolus is the first ever order for its V150-4.2 MW turbines in Sweden.
The 4MW platform of the Danish wind turbine manufacturer was introduced in 2010 and in 2017, it was expanded with the addition of three new turbines, which includes the V136-4.2 MW and V150-4.2 MW variants. Vestas boasts of installing nearly 20GW of 4MW platform turbines in different parts of the world.
Per Witalisson – CEO of Eolus, commenting on the Backhammar Wind Farm, said: “Eolus is pleased to be the first developer in Sweden to place an order for the V150-4.2 MW turbine. We appreciate Vestas’ continuous strive to develop and optimise turbines that meet site specific requirements. That is the foundation of our long-time relationship.”
Commenting on the Backhammar Wind Farm, Nils de Baar – President of Vestas Northern & Central Europe, said: “After more than a decade of successfully partnering with Eolus, we continue to build on our strong relationship. With the Bäckhammar project we employ our two largest rotors to maximise production and reduce the cost of energy, underlining our 4 MW platform’s flexibility and adaptability.”
