Babcock International Group PLC, a leading international defence company, has signed a significant £750 million contract with the UK Ministry of Defence’s Submarine Delivery Agency. This four-year agreement aims to develop the infrastructure required to support and sustain the UK’s submarine fleet for decades.

Major Infrastructure Upgrade at Devonport Site

The contract entails substantial upgrades to existing facilities at Devonport, crucial for future capabilities of the Royal Navy and the UK’s Defence Nuclear Enterprise. It includes the enhancement of a dock, logistics, and modern support facilities, integral to maintaining the UK submarine fleet.

Enhancing National Security and Submarine Maintenance

The contract is a key part of Devonport’s site-wide infrastructure upgrade, essential for base maintenance and deep maintenance projects for current and future submarine classes, including nuclear defuel operations.

Government and Defence Leaders Emphasize Contract’s Significance

Defence Secretary Grant Shapps stressed the importance of maintaining submarine infrastructure, highlighting job creation and economic growth in the south-west. Sir Chris Gardner KBE of the SDA emphasized the critical role of these facilities in national security.
