Avangrid, Inc. (NYSE: AGR), a leading sustainable energy company and a part of the Iberdrola Group, has announced its inaugural renewable energy project in Oklahoma, named Pontotoc Wind. This 147.5 MW wind farm, featuring 33 turbines, is set to bring clean wind power to approximately 40,000 homes in Pontotoc County, marking Avangrid’s expansion into 25 U.S. states.
The Pontotoc Wind farm is expected to generate around 500,000 MWh of power annually, providing substantial renewable energy to power more than 40,000 homes. This project reflects Avangrid’s commitment to accelerating the clean energy transition not only in Oklahoma but across the United States.
Slated to begin in 2024, the construction of the Pontotoc Wind farm is anticipated to create over 200 jobs. Avangrid foresees the project contributing significantly to the local economy for more than two decades. This includes providing jobs for wind farm operations and facilitating community investment. Additionally, the project is projected to contribute approximately $25 million in property taxes over its lifetime, benefiting local schools and services.
In its planning stages, Avangrid worked in close partnership with the U.S. Air Force, ensuring that the site selection for the Pontotoc Wind project aligns with the Air Force’s mission and operational needs.
As the third-largest renewable energy operator in the U.S., with more than 8.6 GW of installed renewable capacity, Avangrid’s completion of the Pontotoc Wind project will solidify its operations or assets in half of the U.S. states.
The Pontotoc Wind project by Avangrid, Inc. represents a significant stride in the sustainable energy sector. By expanding into Oklahoma, Avangrid not only diversifies its geographic footprint but also reinforces its commitment to the development of renewable energy infrastructure, setting a precedent for future clean energy initiatives.
