Atlantic Shores proposes to build 2.3GW offshore wind farm projects in New Jersey

Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind, a 50-50 partnership between EDF Renewables North America and Shell New Energies US, has submitted a proposal to the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities. The proposal is part of the state’s second solicitation, which seeks to award between 1,200 MW and 2,400 MW of offshore wind energy projects. Atlantic Shores is offering to construct up to 2,300 MW of wind energy capacity, which could significantly contribute to the state’s clean energy goals.

If approved, Atlantic Shores’ project would be one of the largest offshore wind farms in the United States, with the potential to power approximately one million homes. This capacity aligns with New Jersey’s aggressive plans to expand renewable energy and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. The proposed wind farm could reduce the state’s carbon dioxide emissions by 16% from electricity generation, marking a substantial step towards New Jersey’s environmental objectives.

The first project under this proposal is targeted to be completed as early as 2027, providing a timely boost to the state’s renewable energy supply. Jennifer Daniels, Development Director at Atlantic Shores, highlighted the strategic importance of their proposal: “As the holder of one of the largest offshore wind leases in the United States, Atlantic Shores has an incredible opportunity to help meet New Jersey’s demand for clean, affordable energy within our 180,000 acres.”

Atlantic Shores has rolled out a comprehensive plan to develop local workforce capabilities in anticipation of this project. The company has formed partnerships with key educational and community organizations such as Rutgers University, Rowan College, the Barnegat Bay Partnership, and the Boys & Girls Club of Atlantic City. These collaborations aim to prepare local workers for the upcoming opportunities in the offshore wind industry and foster long-term economic growth in New Jersey.

Joris Veldhoven, Commercial Director of Atlantic Shores, expressed enthusiasm about their community and educational initiatives: “These partnerships will help build strong local talent pools for Atlantic Shores, at the same time enabling New Jersey workers to be on the ground floor of a massive new industry.”

Beyond wind energy, Atlantic Shores is committed to exploring innovative technologies like battery storage and green hydrogen. These efforts are part of a broader innovation plan designed to support New Jersey’s goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050, as outlined in its 2019 Energy Master Plan.

Atlantic Shores is poised to use New Jersey’s upcoming Wind Port for staging and marshalling, underscoring their commitment to using state resources and boosting the local economy through job creation and supply chain development.
