AMEA Power launches Aysha-1 Wind Project in Ethiopia: A major step for renewable energy

AMEA Power has officially unveiled the Aysha-1 Wind Project, a groundbreaking 300MW wind energy initiative in Ethiopia. Project Overview and Impact

The Aysha-1 Wind Project, valued at USD 620 million, will be located in Aysha, Somali Region State. This wind energy project is set to generate approximately 1,400 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of clean energy annually, enough to power over 4 million households. The project aims to reduce carbon emissions by more than 690,000 tons per year and is expected to create over 1,500 direct jobs during both the construction and operational phases.

The Aysha-1 Wind Project plays a critical role in Ethiopia’s renewable energy strategy, supporting the country’s goal to achieve 70% renewable energy capacity by 2030. The signing ceremony for the Aysha-1 Wind Project took place on August 17, 2024. The event was attended by key figures such as H.E. Ato Ahmed Shide, Minister of Finance of Ethiopia; H.E. Sheikh Shakhboot Bin Nahyan Al Nahyan, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of the UAE; and H.E. Mohamed Salem Al-Rashedi, UAE Ambassador to Ethiopia. The presence of Mr. Ato Ashebir Balcha, CEO of Ethiopian Electric Power; Mr. Ato Abebe Gebrehiwot, Head of PPP DG at the Ministry of Finance; and Mr. Hussain Al Nowais, Chairman of AMEA Power, emphasized the importance of the project in strengthening the energy partnership between Ethiopia and the UAE.

Hussain Al Nowais, Chairman of AMEA Power, described the Aysha-1 Wind Project as a landmark achievement, stating, “The Aysha-1 Wind Project represents a significant milestone for AMEA Power as we finalize the Power Purchase Agreement and Implementation Agreement in Ethiopia. This endeavor will be the largest wind farm in the Horn of Africa, setting a new benchmark for project-financed renewable energy in the region. The Aysha-1 Wind Project was officially launched during COP28 in Dubai, where a Letter of Award (LOA) was signed between the Ministry of Finance, Ethiopian Electric Power, and AMEA Power. The agreement was finalized under Ethiopia’s Public Private Partnership (PPP) laws, which facilitate private sector involvement in infrastructure development.
