Ambuja Cements partners with Coolbrook to accelerate net zero goals
Ambuja Cements Limited, a part of the diversified Adani Group portfolio, has made a significant stride towards achieving its ambitious Net Zero goals by forming a strategic partnership with Finland-based technology company Coolbrook. This collaboration introduces Coolbrook’s revolutionary zero-carbon heating technology into Ambuja’s cement manufacturing process, setting a new benchmark for sustainable industrial practices.
The zero-carbon heating technology leverages renewable electricity usage to generate high-temperature process heating without carbon emissions. By integrating this innovation, Ambuja Cements aims to drastically reduce its fossil fuel dependence while simultaneously lowering carbon emissions across its cement manufacturing process. The company sees this move as a critical element in meeting its environmental targets, which include achieving 28% alternative fuel usage and 60% green power reliance by 2028.
Ajay Kapur, CEO of the cement business at the Adani Group, underscored the importance of this partnership as a pivotal step towards sustainable industrial practices. He noted that leveraging the Adani Group’s renewable power capabilities would enable Ambuja Cements to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and provide long-term value for stakeholders.
Coolbrook’s CEO, Joonas Rauramo, highlighted that Ambuja’s leadership in renewable energy and sustainability made it an ideal partner to deploy their innovative solutions. Coolbrook’s technology, a product of advanced space science and chemical engineering, promises to revolutionise the cement manufacturing process by eliminating the need for conventional fossil fuels.
The RotoDynamic Heater™ is particularly suited to replace fossil fuel dependence in the cement kiln pre-calciner—a critical component of cement manufacturing processes. The process is not only carbon-free but also cost-competitive, making it a viable solution for industries aiming to align with global energy transition goals.
Ambuja Cements’ sustainability initiatives extend beyond technology integration. The company’s operations have long been defined by environmentally friendly practices, earning it accolades such as a ‘Leadership Score’ of A- for climate action from CDP. Furthermore, it is the first cement manufacturer to join the Alliance for Industrial Decarbonisation, a global initiative facilitated by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
In its journey towards becoming a net zero entity, Ambuja Cements continues to innovate, leveraging partnerships and advanced technologies to ensure sustainable industrial practices, operational excellence, and environmental stewardship. With this partnership, the company reaffirms its position as a leader in the global cement industry decarbonisation movement and the broader energy transition.
