Amazon Web Services (), a division of Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN), unveiled plans to establish a new AWS infrastructure region in by early 2025. The AWS Asia Pacific (Taipei) Region is set to enhance the service availability for a diverse range of clients including developers, startups, entrepreneurs, and organizations across various sectors such as education, entertainment, financial services, and nonprofits.

Strategic Expansion to Boost Local and Regional Development

The establishment of the AWS Asia Pacific (Taipei) Region represents a strategic expansion of AWS’s global infrastructure, which already includes 105 Availability Zones across 33 geographic regions. The new Taiwan region will consist of three Availability Zones at launch, further enhancing AWS’s commitment to providing resilient, secure, and compliant cloud services globally. This expansion is part of AWS’s broader plan to add 21 more Availability Zones and seven more regions in locations including Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, and a specialized AWS European Sovereign Cloud.

Prasad Kalyanaraman, Vice President of Infrastructure Services at AWS, emphasized the impact of the new region: “The new AWS Region in Taiwan will enable organizations to unlock the full potential of the cloud and build with AWS technologies like compute, storage, databases, analytics, , and to drive innovation and transform how businesses and institutions serve their customers.”

This initiative is expected to catalyze substantial economic growth within Taiwan by generating high-quality employment opportunities and advancing sustainable development initiatives. AWS plans to invest billions of dollars in Taiwan over the next 15 years, signaling a long-term commitment to the region’s technological and economic development.

The Premier of Executive Yuan, Mr. Jung-tai Cho, commented on the significance of AWS’s expansion: “We appreciate AWS for offering a diverse array of innovative cloud services to both local and international enterprises. The AWS Asia Pacific (Taipei) Region will provide significant benefits including low latency, high data residency, and robust data protection, tailored to meet the specific needs of Taiwanese businesses and multinational corporations operating within the region. Notable local enterprises such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), Cathay Financial Holdings, and Chunghwa Telecom have already been utilizing AWS to drive innovation and efficiency.

For instance, Cathay Financial Holdings has leveraged AWS to enhance the stability, security, and scalability of its financial services since 2021. Marcus Yao, Senior Executive Vice President of CFH, noted, “With the forthcoming new AWS Region in Taiwan, CFH is expected to provide customers with even more diverse and convenient financial services.”

Commitment to Sustainability

In line with Amazon’s global sustainability goals, the new AWS Region will be supported by 100% renewable energy by 2025. Amazon is also committed to becoming water positive by 2030, which involves returning more water to communities than it consumes in its direct operations. These environmental commitments highlight AWS’s dedication to integrating sustainability into its expansion strategies.
