Aker Solutions secures EPCIC contract from Equinor for Mongstad Refinery upgrades
Aker Solutions ASA has been awarded a substantial Engineering, Procurement, Construction, Installation, and Commissioning (EPCIC) contract by Equinor, valued between NOK 2.5 billion and NOK 4.0 billion. The contract aims to enhance the wastewater treatment facilities and reduce the environmental footprint at the Mongstad refinery, located on Norway’s west coast, near Bergen. This initiative is part of Equinor’s broader goal to slash emissions significantly from the Mongstad facility, aligning with their strategy to bolster operational efficiency and ensure sustainable production.
The Mongstad refinery is an integral part of Norway’s oil and gas distribution network, linking multiple North Sea oilfields with crude tankers via an oil terminal. The refinery’s existing wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) processes water from both the refinery and external sources, including the connected oil terminal.
Under the EPCIC contract, Aker Solutions will oversee project management, engineering, procurement, construction, installation work, and commissioning. The project will utilize Aker Solutions’ engineering office in Bergen for major project management and engineering tasks, with additional engineering support from their Mumbai office. Prefabrication and assembly will occur at the Egersund yard, while the Stord yard will supply construction personnel to the site. At its peak, the project is expected to employ over 500 individuals.
Paal Eikeseth, executive vice president and head of Aker Solutions’ Life Cycle segment, highlighted the alignment of this project with the company’s commitment to supporting customers in enhancing efficiency and minimizing environmental impacts.
The project is set to commence immediately, with completion targeted for the fourth quarter of 2026. It will be recorded as order intake in the second quarter of 2024 in the Life Cycle segment of Aker Solutions.
