ADNOC (Abu Dhabi National Oil Company) has announced a significant 15-year Heads of Agreement with EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG, one of Germany’s leading energy companies. This deal involves the delivery of 0.6 million metric tonnes per annum (mmtpa) of liquefied natural gas (LNG) sourced from ADNOC’s innovative Ruwais LNG project. The agreement reinforces ADNOC’s role as a pivotal global natural gas provider while supporting Germany’s energy diversification and security efforts.

The Ruwais LNG project, located in Al Ruwais Industrial City, Abu Dhabi, is set to be the first LNG export facility in the Middle East and Africa to utilize clean power, integrating cutting-edge technologies and artificial intelligence to minimize emissions. This project is not just a commercial enterprise but a step forward in sustainable energy practices, expected to commence deliveries by 2028.

ADNOC’s Executive Vice President of Downstream Business Management, Fatema Al Nuaimi, emphasized the project’s momentum and its alignment with the UAE-Germany Energy Security and Industry Accelerator (ESIA) agreement signed in 2022. On the other side, Peter Heydecker, Board Member for Sustainable Generation Infrastructure at EnBW, highlighted the strategic importance of this first LNG contract with ADNOC for EnBW’s energy procurement diversification and the establishment of a sustainable LNG value chain.

This agreement is contingent on a final investment decision on the project, which includes regulatory approvals and the finalization of a definitive Sale and Purchase Agreement. Upon completion, the Ruwais project, featuring two 4.8 mmtpa LNG liquefaction trains, will double ADNOC’s LNG production capacity to approximately 15mmtpa.

This agreement between ADNOC and EnBW marks a significant step in global energy collaborations, potentially setting a benchmark for future LNG agreements involving sustainability and technological advancements. It showcases a robust example of how energy partnerships can evolve to meet global energy security and environmental challenges.
