ACCIONA-led consortium bags power transmission projects in Peru

The Peruvian Ministry of Energy and Mines, in collaboration with the Private Investment Promotion Agency (Proinversión), has awarded an ACCIONA-led consortium the concession to develop three significant power transmission projects. With a total investment of US$337 million (approximately €315 million), these initiatives are poised to significantly improve the electrical infrastructure in the Ica and Arequipa regions, benefiting over one million residents.

The projects include the construction of more than 400 kilometers of new transmission lines, the establishment of six new substations, and the modernization of six existing substations. This infrastructure development is expected to facilitate the integration of over 10GW of renewable energy in southern Peru, reflecting a substantial step towards enhancing the region’s energy capacity and sustainability.

The new infrastructure will feature key components such as the Poroma Hub and Colectora substations and a critical 500kV link between Hub Poroma and Colectora in Ica. In Arequipa, the plan includes the new San José Hub substation and a 220kV link from San José to Repartición Hub. Additionally, the construction of the Marcona II, San Isidro, and Pampa substations, along with a 138kV link connecting Marcona II to San Isidro (Bella Unión) and Pampa (Chala), is on the agenda.

Each of the three contracts encompasses a construction phase of fifty months followed by thirty years of operation and maintenance, indicating a long-term commitment to energy stability and efficiency in the region.

These new contracts further solidify ACCIONA’s position as one of the leading holders of power transmission concessions in Peru. The company boasts a robust portfolio in the region, complemented by extensive experience in infrastructure, notably in water treatment and management. Noteworthy projects include the Talara desalination plant, the La Chira and Arequipa wastewater treatment plants, and significant constructions like the Daniel Alcides Carrión hospital and the Pucallpa prison.

Earlier this year, ACCIONA, in a consortium with Ferrovial and Sacyr, secured the thirty-year concession for the Lima Peripheral Ring Road, emphasizing its continued commitment to major infrastructure projects in the country.

In addition to infrastructure, ACCIONA Energía has made significant strides in renewable energy within Peru, evidenced by the construction of the 131.1MW San Juan de Marcona wind farm in Ica. The company also actively supports local communities through its acciona.org foundation, focusing on providing clean and sustainable energy, drinking water, and essential services to low-income residents in remote areas.

ACCIONA’s comprehensive involvement in Peru’s infrastructure development, particularly in power transmission and renewable energy, positions the company as a pivotal player in South America’s energy transition. These projects not only enhance the electrical grid’s capacity and reliability but also contribute significantly to the region’s economic and environmental sustainability.
