ACCIONA Energía, in a groundbreaking agreement with Prologis, the global leader in logistics real estate, has announced plans to install rooftop solar panels on several of Prologis’ properties across Spain. This initiative aims to convert these facilities into sustainable solar power plants with a combined capacity of up to 10.5 MWp.
The collaboration involves the installation of photovoltaic panels on the roofs of Prologis’ warehouses and buildings, which will not only supply energy to Prologis’ clients but also to the local community through shared consumption subscriptions. This allows residents within a two-kilometer radius to partake in the energy produced, contributing to reduced electricity bills and fostering a cleaner environment with the use of 100% renewable electricity.
The first installations, with capacities of 2.5 MWp in Penedès (Barcelona) and 3 MWp in San Fernando de Henares (Madrid), are set to significantly impact local sustainability efforts. These projects are expected to prevent the emission of approximately 3,300 tons of CO2 annually.
Cristian Oller, Head of Asset Management for Southern Europe at Prologis, highlighted the strategic importance of this alliance: “We are a company that, given the current energy transition, is constantly working and innovating with new sustainable formulas to apply in our logistics parks, such as this alliance with ACCIONA Energía. Our Net Zero 2040 program offers us a realistic timetable for achieving our sustainable goals and includes a constant evaluation of the carbon footprint of all our buildings, allowing us to draw up a plan of measures for the coming years.”
ACCIONA Energía reaffirms its commitment to enhancing self-consumption and decentralized energy generation, aiming to decarbonize the logistics and transport sectors. This agreement marks a significant stride toward fulfilling both companies’ sustainability and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) objectives, with Prologis already achieving half of its target to install 1 GW of solar capacity by 2025.
This partnership between ACCIONA Energía and Prologis is a prime example of how corporate collaboration can effectively drive forward the renewable energy sector, specifically within the logistics industry. By harnessing the power of the sun, these companies are not only reducing their carbon footprint but are also setting a precedent for the integration of sustainable practices in commercial real estate.
