Tata Power wins Maharashtra’s largest 400MW wind-solar hybrid energy project

TAGS

Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a subsidiary of Tata Power, has secured a significant milestone by winning a 400 MW wind-solar hybrid project from the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL). The project, which marks TPREL’s largest renewable initiative in Maharashtra, aims to bolster the state’s clean energy capabilities while fulfilling the state’s Renewable Purchase Obligations (RPO).

The project includes an original contracted capacity of 200 MW, with an additional 200 MW under a greenshoe option. The greenshoe option allows for extra capacity under favourable conditions, expanding the potential reach of this initiative. The wind-solar hybrid system will significantly contribute to reducing carbon emissions, with an estimated annual reduction of 895 million kilograms of CO2.

The power generated from this project will be supplied to MSEDCL, assisting the company in addressing the growing energy demands in Maharashtra. This renewable project will also efficiently use the local land resources and is expected to be completed within 24 months of the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) signing.

Meeting renewable energy targets

This development is a pivotal part of MSEDCL’s initiative to meet the state’s RPO, ensuring the integration of sustainable energy solutions at competitive tariffs. The contract was awarded after a reverse auction process, demonstrating TPREL’s ability to compete and secure large-scale renewable projects. With the growing importance of renewable energy, this project reaffirms Maharashtra’s commitment to a low-carbon future.

According to Tata Power’s leadership, this accomplishment underlines the company’s focus on innovation in green energy and reaffirms its commitment to helping India transition to sustainable energy sources. With this deal, TPREL’s total renewable capacity now stands at 10.5 GW, of which 5.7 GW is in various stages of implementation.

Expert opinion on renewable future

Industry experts believe this project will have a positive impact on Maharashtra’s energy sector. Renewable energy analysts note that such hybrid projects are crucial for balancing energy grids and meeting peak demands. The combination of wind and solar energy ensures more reliable power generation compared to stand-alone solar or wind projects, making it an ideal solution for regions like Maharashtra, which experience variable climatic conditions.

Experts also stressed the importance of TPREL’s leadership in the renewable energy market, noting that the company’s extensive portfolio and manufacturing capabilities position it to play a key role in India’s energy transition.
