Kamal Haasan’s “Indian 2,” directed by S Shankar, has undergone a significant cut, reducing its runtime by 12 minutes in response to mixed reviews. This updated version aims to deliver a more concise cinematic experience.

Lyca Productions announced the revision of the film’s length on their official X page, following its initial worldwide release on July 12, 2024. The original version, clocking in at three hours, has been shortened to enhance viewer engagement. “Witness the enhanced version of #Indian2. Now presenting a streamlined edition trimmed by 12 min. Catch it in cinemas near you for a crisper experience!” said the production house in their social media update.

“Indian 2” serves as a sequel to the 1996 hit “Indian,” also directed by Shankar and starring Kamal Haasan in a dual role. The sequel brings back Haasan as Senapathy, an ageing freedom fighter who becomes a vigilante fighting corruption. The cast also includes prominent actors such as Kajal Aggarwal, Siddharth, and Rakul Preet Singh.

Despite the star-studded ensemble and high expectations, the sequel faced criticism for its lengthy screenplay and was deemed inferior to its predecessor by critics. The original feedback highlighted issues with the film’s pace and Anirudh Ravichander’s musical score, although Haasan’s performance received accolades.

Produced jointly by Lyca Productions and Red Giant Movies, the film was released in both standard and IMAX formats. In light of the significant initial runtime, which extended over six hours, the producers decided to split the story into two parts, with “Indian 3” slated for a 2025 release.

The move to shorten “Indian 2” underscores the filmmakers’ responsiveness to audience feedback, aiming to maintain the legacy of its highly regarded predecessor while adapting to contemporary cinematic tastes.
