In a landmark development for the energy sector, Hygenco Green Energies has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Mitsubishi Power to advance green hydrogen and ammonia-fired gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC) power plants. Saito Mitsunori, Chief Representative of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) India, highlighted the commitment of JICA to supporting green hydrogen technologies. “JICA is dedicated to facilitating the development of green hydrogen and ammonia technologies. The collaboration between Hygenco and Mitsubishi Power represents the essential international cooperation required to tackle climate change and foster sustainable growth. JICA will continue to support this initiative through the JICA – Neev Fund co-creation platform,” he said.

Hygenco Green Energies’ Role

Under the terms of the MoU, Hygenco Green Energies will be responsible for supplying green fuel for Mitsubishi Power’s GTCC technology to potential clients. The company plans to develop and operate large-scale, commercially viable green hydrogen and ammonia production assets. These assets will be provided on a build-own-operate or gas-as-a-service model, ensuring flexibility and scalability in meeting global energy demands.

Expert Opinions on the Collaboration

Amit Bansal, CEO of Hygenco Green Energies, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership. “The collaboration will synergize Hygenco’s green fuel supply with Mitsubishi Power’s advanced technology, both in India and internationally. This initiative embodies the spirit of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, or ‘the world is one family,’” he stated. Bansal emphasised the company’s commitment to leveraging its expertise to drive the decarbonisation of power generation and contribute to a sustainable energy future.

Prem Prabhakar, Managing Director and CEO of SBI Ventures Limited, which manages the Neev II Fund—a significant investor in Hygenco—also shared his views. “We believe this partnership will lead to innovative and sustainable energy solutions. Investing in green hydrogen and ammonia production is critical for enhancing India’s energy security and achieving its environmental objectives,” Prabhakar said.

Mitsubishi Power is at the forefront of developing hydrogen and ammonia firing technologies aimed at decarbonising existing GTCC plants.
