Volvo Group to start producing battery modules at Belgian truck plant by 2025

Volvo Group has announced plans to build a battery module manufacturing facility at its Ghent truck plant in Belgium, aiming to start production by 2025.

Currently, the automobile giant procures both cells and modules from its suppliers.

The new battery module facility at Ghent will use battery cells from partners as well as from the planned Swedish battery cell plant.

Jens Holtinger — Volvo Group Trucks Operations Executive Vice President said: “We have started the investment process to establish battery module manufacturing in Ghent. The building is expected to be 12,000 m2 and be located at the Volvo Group manufacturing site.

“The new high-tech module factory will consist of an almost fully automated process with robots. This means that employees with the necessary competences will be recruited, both externally and by building on our internal competences.”

The Swedish luxury vehicles manufacturer will start producing battery electric heavy-duty trucks at its Ghent plant in the second half of 2023. Battery packs required for the trucks will also be built at the plant.

It is already building heavy-duty electric trucks at its assembly plant in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Volvo Group targets to see at least 35% of the vehicles sold worldwide to be electric by 2030.
