Sona Comstar, Israel’s IRP to develop magnet-less e-motor technology for EVs

Sona Comstar, an Indian automotive component manufacturer, and IRP Nexus Group, an Israeli electric powertrain solutions provider, will jointly develop a magnet-less e-motor technology for the electric vehicles (EVs) market.

The two firms will invent a new powertrain, manufacture it, and commercialize it around the world. The partnership was facilitated by India’s iCreate (International Centre for Entrepreneurship and Technology).

The iEV Powertrain Project will see Sona Comstar and IRP Nexus Group’s subsidiary IRP Systems conceive, design, prototype, and manufacture magnet-less powertrain (motor + controller) that is highly efficient and has low-cost. The magnet-less e-motor technology is targeted for electric two- and three-wheelers for the global market.

Kiran Deshmukh – CTO of Sona Comstar said: “We are excited with this partnership as it will help India reduce its dependence on imports of critical raw materials. The system developed through this partnership will be environmentally compatible and cost-effective, ensuring the security of natural resources by avoiding the use of rare earth elements.”

As per the agreement, the Israeli electric powertrain solutions provider will license its technology to Sona Comstar to enable the latter to manufacture the system exclusively in India. Mass production is anticipated to begin in 2023.
