Siemens Mobility to supply light rail vehicles for Düsseldorf and Duisburg

Siemens Mobility has bagged a joint order worth around €400 million from Düsseldorfer Rheinbahn (Düsseldorf) and Duisburger Verkehrsgesellschaft (Duisburg) in Germany for 109 Avenio HF high-floor light rail vehicles.

The contract from the two German public transportation companies includes an option for 48 more light rail vehicles.

Under the contract, Siemens Mobility will also be responsible for the maintenance and servicing of the Duisburg vehicles for 24 years, with an option for an extension by eight more years.

A contract for the supply of spare parts for 24 years was also signed for the Düsseldorf vehicles.

Michael Peter – CEO of Siemens Mobility said: “This order has a very special meaning for us, since it marks our return to the market for high-floor light rail vehicles. Our trains will offer more than two million people in Düsseldorf and Duisburg the highest level of passenger comfort.

“Our services will also guarantee our customers optimal availability and a sustainable increase in value over the vehicles’ entire lifecycle.”

The rail vehicles will be used on the nearly 85km long light rail network in Duisburg and Düsseldorf, and will also run to Neuss, Krefeld, and Meerbusch, said Siemens Mobility.

The first vehicles in the order are planned to be delivered in 2025. Each of the light rail vehicles will have 51 seats and will accommodate 177 passengers.

All the Avenio HF high-floor light rail vehicles will have folding steps to serve different platform heights.

According to Siemens Mobility, the Avenio HF light rail vehicles provide maximum passenger comfort due to their features like air suspension, air conditioning, and infotainment systems.

Also, a part of the trains is the Siemens Tram Assistant digital collision warning system that assists the driver with radar and video sensors. These sensors provide early detection of possibly dangerous situations, thereby helping in the prevention of accidents.
