Samsung Electronics, Red Hat to partner on next-gen memory software

Samsung Electronics has entered into a collaboration with open source solutions provider Red Hat for developing software technologies for next-generation memory solutions.

The collaboration will concentrate on developing and validating open source software for existing as well as emerging memory and storage products. NVMe SSDs, CXL memory, computational memory/storage such as HBM-PIM and Smart SSDs, and fabrics will all be covered by the partnership.

Samsung Electronics and Red Hat aim to create an expansive ecosystem for memory hardware and software that are integrated closely.

Marjet Andriesse — Red Hat Senior Vice President and Head of Red Hat Asia Pacific said: “In the upcoming data-centric era, the integration of memory-centric hardware and software architectures will become increasingly essential, and for this purpose, Red Hat is happy to participate in the joint undertaking with Samsung.”

According to the partners, the quick growth of data which is driven by artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR) and the metaverse is bringing disruptive changes to memory designs. This needs software technologies that are more sophisticated to better connect with the latest hardware advancements.

Yongcheol Bae — Samsung Electronics Executive Vice President and Head of the Memory Application Engineering Team said: “Samsung and Red Hat will make a concerted effort to define and standardize memory software solutions that embrace evolving server and memory hardware, while building a more robust memory ecosystem.

“We will invite partners from across the IT industry to join us in expanding the software-hardware memory ecosystem to create greater customer value.”

The collaboration will be extended by Samsung Electronics through the launch of the Samsung Memory Research Cloud (SMRC), where the partners will create and verify software solutions on varied server environments.

Expected to open in the latter half of this year, Samsung Memory Research Cloud will serve as an open collaboration hub to help customers and partners to assess new software products in the configuration of ideal combinations with memory hardware.
